The theatrical anime adaptation of Akiko Abe’s coming-of-age novel, To You in the Beyond, is scheduled to premiere in Japanese theaters on October 9, 2026. Initially revealed as part of Shochiku's upcoming film lineup with a general fall window, the specific release date was confirmed alongside a new teaser trailer and promotional artwork. While the domestic launch is finalized, international release details are currently listed as to be announced.

Narrative Premise and Setting

Set in 1974, the story centers on Kazuki Tsukigase, a high school boy harboring a personal secret. The plot is set in motion when he encounters Nanao, a mysterious girl found collapsed on a beach at a hidden cove. Described as a gentle tale of connection and a visitor from beyond, the film explores the emotional ties that form following their fateful meeting.

Production Staff and Studio

TMS Entertainment is handling the animation production for the film. The project is directed by Junichi Wada, known for his work on High Card. Sayaka Kuwamura, who wrote the screenplay for Josee, the Tiger and the Fish, is providing the script. Character designs and chief animation direction are managed by Hechima. Additionally, the film features an insert song titled “Balsam” performed by Tota.

The film is based on the novel published by Shueisha under their Shueisha Orange Bunko imprint. Shochiku is responsible for the distribution of the film within Japan.
